Beautiful bread
Sourdough Story

Tuesday May 20, 2003
On Sunday I made bread, not a bid surprise there I make bread just about ever weekend but this time I had the prescence of mind to take a picture of my creation.
Sourdough Bread
There is a bit of story behind my sourdough. I enjoy baking with the wild yeast, takes one back to earlier days when all you had was what you scratch out of the ground. Things are quite that drastic for me, all the ingredients are bought in a store after all. On with the story. Last year when I making some sourdough (sd) on a particularly cool day I put the day in the oven to proof. I turned on the gas very low intending to turn it off after a couple minutes. Well, I forgot and the starter was killed. I was bummed. I had obtained the starter from a group that is keeping up a starter called Carl Griffiths 1847 Oregon Trail Sourdough Starter. It is a great starter, active and after it is used a while gets nicely sour. But it was dead.
Fast forward about 9 months. I find in the freezer a container holding a lump of some kind of dough. Don’t know what it is, no label, but I don’t want to just toss it. I let it thaw and then look at it again. Say to myself, smells like sourdough. Well I feed it a bit and it takes right off, I was a happy camper. Glad to be back in the sourdough business. If the starter is ready and friends are over one can count on getting sourdough pancakes for breakfast around here (big hint to my siblings).
